in Passenger Ship Fires

The last thing the passengers and crew of the recent Concordia cruise ship disaster needed was the outbreak of a fire – the fact that there wasn't (or at least there weren't any fires reported), in itself was a miracle.

Not only would the presence of heat and blinding smoke have caused many obvious issues to those on board but the task of fighting the fire in a listing or tilted environment would be nearly impossible.

Given the near 90-degree list to the starboard of the vessel any standard fire hose storage configurations would have been rendered useless at best and at worst probably would have contributed to the mayhem of the ship’s evacuation when the fire fighting hose was deployed.

These recent events got us thinking at QLFA and following a trial we can confirm that the Attack Pack and ComPack can be placed and deployed on any steep surface – so long as there's an edge for the resulting coils to sit on like a wall etc.

When compared to a traditional flaked or rolled hose the benefits of our QLFA are clear: Both of these deployment methods require the hose to be stretched out – and once charged and stretched these long lengths of hose laid up and down steep slopes become far too heavy due to their water content and would likely get wedged.

The QuickLay hose deployment packs would ensure a controlled hose deployment ready to fight fires on the ship regardless of the ships orientation. Simply place the pack against a wall/edge, connect the pack to a water supply, turn the water on, advance and fight the fire!

Myself and the team at QLFA are thinking of those who lost their lives, those still missing and the emergency service men and women working around the clock to deal with the unprecedented task at hand.
